Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. Protein sequences of mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, complicating identification by sequence homology. The MRPS25 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, and a pseudogene is located on chromosome 4.
