FBXL5 유전자는 약 40개의 아미노산으로 구성된 F-box 모티프를 특징으로 하는 F-box 단백질 패밀리에 속합니다. F-box 단백질은 SCFs(SKP1-cullin-F-box)로 알려진 유비퀴틴 단백질 리가아제 복합체의 4개 서브유닛 중 하나를 구성하며, 인산화 의존적 유비퀴틴화 과정에서 작용합니다.
F-box 단백질은 다음 3가지 클래스(Fbws, Fbls, Fbxs)로 나뉩니다. 본 단백질은 Fbls 클래스에 속하며, F-box와 여러 개의 연속적인 leucine-rich repeat을 포함합니다. 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 2개의 전사체 변형이 생성됩니다.
