Target Information

This gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) family and encodes an insulin-regulated facilitative glucose transporter.
In the absence of insulin, this membrane protein is sequestered in muscle and adipose tissue cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it translocates to the cell surface to transport glucose across the membrane.
Mutations in this gene are associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
