Target Information
Eukaryotes contain two protein translational systems, one in the cytoplasm and one in the mitochondria. Mitochondrial translation is essential for maintaining mitochondrial function. Mutations in this system can lead to defects in the respiratory chain–oxidative phosphorylation system and impaired maintenance of mitochondrial DNA.
The GFM1 gene encodes one of the mitochondrial translation elongation factors. Its precise role in mitochondrial function and disease states associated with mitochondrial dysfunction remains under investigation.
