Target Information

The hepatitis B virus is an important cause of acute and chronic liver disease and is the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. The Hepatitis B X antigen is a 154 amino acid (~17 kDa) multifunctional protein involved in the development of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The virus affects approximately 350 million people worldwide. Immunization against hepatitis B is an essential component of preventive medicine and is offered to all children in about 30 countries. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family, and infection with HBV is generally more serious than infection with hepatitis A virus. In some individuals, infection persists, leading to chronic intracellular viral carriage that may result in hepatocellular carcinoma. There are currently about 400 million HBV carriers worldwide, making HBV one of the most common human pathogens.
