This gene encodes a single-pass membrane protein that contains a conserved sequence of the GCN5 or NAT superfamily of N-acetyltransferases and belongs to the N-acyltransferase (NAT) superfamily.
This protein is neuron-specific and acts as the N-acetylaspartate (NAA) biosynthetic enzyme, catalyzing NAA synthesis from L-aspartate and acetyl-CoA.
NAA serves as a major storage and transport form of acetyl coenzyme A in the nervous system. Mutations in this gene result in primary NAA deficiency (hypoacetylaspartia).
