이 유전자는 N-말단 영역에 phosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase 활성을, C-말단 영역에 phosphoribosylaminoimidazole succinocarboxamide synthetase 활성을 가진 이기능성 효소를 암호화합니다. 이는 퓨린 생합성의 6단계와 7단계를 촉매하며, 같은 경로의 효소를 암호화하는 다른 유전자와 인접해 있으며 상호 조절됩니다. 인간 게놈에는 이 유전자의 여러 유사유전자가 존재하며, 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
