Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends. Microtubules are essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport. They also enable cellular movement via flagella and cilia.
In mammalian cells, microtubule minus ends are anchored at microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). GTP is required for tubulin heterodimers to associate and form microtubules. Microtubule dynamics are reversible, characterized by alternating growth and shortening at minus ends, known as dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six tubulin genes encode different tubulin classes.
