Target Information
The OPRM1 gene encodes the mu opioid receptor, the primary site of action for commonly used opioids such as morphine, heroin, fentanyl, and methadone. It also serves as the main receptor for endogenous opioid peptides including beta-endorphin and enkephalins. The OPRM1 receptor is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family, with three main types of opioid receptors identified: mu, kappa, and delta — each possessing distinct pharmacologic profiles.
