Target Information
Cathepsin C, also known as dipeptidyl aminopeptidase I (DPPI), is a tetrameric lysosomal cysteine peptidase belonging to the papain family. It plays a key role in intracellular protein degradation and precursor processing, contributing to cell growth, neuraminidase activation, and platelet factor XIII activation. Cathepsin C is related to other lysosomal cysteine proteinases such as cathepsin B, H, and L. It sequentially removes dipeptides from the amino terminus and requires halide ions (chloride) and thiols for full enzymatic activity. Expression is highest in spleen, kidney, cytotoxic lymphocytes, and myeloid cells, where it localizes to the secretory granule compartment. The enzyme is synthesized as a proenzyme and processed into two chains forming the mature active enzyme.
