Crystallins are divided into two classes: taxon-specific and ubiquitous.
- Taxon-specific (phylogenetically restricted) crystallins are expressed in specific tissues or species.
- Ubiquitous crystallins are the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index.
The CRYM gene encodes a taxon-specific crystallin protein that binds NADPH and shows sequence similarity to bacterial ornithine cyclodeaminases. Unlike structural lens proteins, it binds thyroid hormone, potentially playing a regulatory or developmental role. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
