Target Information
Chromosome 13 comprises nearly 4% of human DNA, containing around 114 million base pairs and approximately 400 genes. Key tumor suppressor genes located on this chromosome include BRCA2 (breast cancer susceptibility gene) and RB1 (retinoblastoma gene).
The RB1 gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein whose defects are linked to malignant retinal growth and various cancers.
The SLITRK1 gene, associated with Tourette syndrome, is also located on chromosome 13.
Polysomy or trisomy of chromosome 13 (Patau syndrome) leads to severe developmental issues and high mortality, with survivors experiencing neurological defects and respiratory complications.
