Specificity Comments:
Cathepsin D is a ubiquitously expressed lysosomal aspartyl protease involved in protein degradation. It is synthesized as an inactive 43 kDa preprocathepsin D, which is cleaved and glycosylated to form a 46 kDa procathepsin D, and further processed into 28 kDa and 15 kDa subunits (heavy and light chains). Cathepsin D exhibits pepsin-like activity, contributing to protein turnover and proteolytic activation of hormones and growth factors. Mutations in this gene are linked to neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis-10 and may be associated with diseases such as breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
