Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to subfamily 7 of the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family, which plays a major role in detoxifying aldehydes produced by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation.
This enzyme is involved in lysine catabolism within the mitochondrial matrix. It is found in both the cytosol and mitochondria, likely due to alternative translation initiation sites.
Mutations in this gene are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Several pseudogenes related to this gene have also been identified.
