Target Information

Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. EPO induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of red cell–specific proteins such as hemoglobin.
The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells, with expression decreasing during maturation.
Hepatocytes are the main source of EPO in the fetus, while interstitial kidney cells become the primary source after birth. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions, and low expression levels are also detected in lung and brain tissues.
Recent studies suggest EPO may protect neuronal tissue and aid in repair following damage.
