Superoxide dismutase (SOD)는 활성산소종(ROS)에 대한 방어 시스템의 항산화 효소로, superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻)을 hydrogen peroxide로 변환시킵니다. 이 hydrogen peroxide는 glutathione peroxidase와 catalase에 의해 무해한 O₂와 H₂O로 전환됩니다.
SOD는 여러 형태로 존재하며 다음과 같습니다:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): 모든 진핵세포에 존재하는 32 kDa의 homodimer 효소
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): 미토콘드리아 matrix에 위치한 80 kDa tetramer 효소
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): 폐, 혈관벽, 기도 등에 주로 발현되는 heparin-binding multimer
- SOD4 (CCS): Cu/Zn-SOD에 Cu를 전달하는 copper chaperone
