Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species, hindering recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, which in prokaryotes is thought to organize the 3′ domain of the 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes corresponding to MRPS7 are found on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
