Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine that acts on T and natural killer cells with broad biological activities. Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa subunit encoded by this gene and a 35 kDa subunit encoded by IL12A.
This cytokine is expressed by activated macrophages and is essential for Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 cells for long-term protection against intracellular pathogens.
Overexpression has been observed in the central nervous system of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, suggesting a potential role in disease pathogenesis. Promoter polymorphisms have also been associated with asthma severity in children.
