Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends. Microtubules are essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport. They also facilitate cell motility via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, microtubules have minus ends anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). The GTP molecule is essential for tubulin heterodimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule dynamics are reversible, showing phases of growth and shortening known as dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six genes encode alpha-tubulin isoforms forming tubulin classes.
