Ferritin은 원핵 및 진핵생물에서 주요한 세포 내 철 저장 단백질입니다. Ferritin은 heavy chain과 light chain으로 구성된 24개의 서브유닛으로 이루어져 있으며, 서브유닛 조성의 변화는 조직별 철의 흡수 및 방출 속도에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다. Ferritin의 주요 기능은 철을 용해성이고 무독성 상태로 저장하는 것입니다. Light chain ferritin 유전자 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환 및 hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome과 관련이 있습니다. Ferritin은 약 450 kDa의 분자량을 가지는 홀로엔자임 구조로, 최대 4,500개의 ferric iron 원자를 저장할 수 있습니다.
