Target Information
The PCDHA8 gene belongs to the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters on chromosome 5 with a genomic organization similar to immune receptor gene clusters.
This cluster contains 15 cadherin superfamily genes, composed of 13 highly similar and 2 more distantly related coding sequences.
Each gene includes variable exons encoding six cadherin ectodomains and shared constant exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain.
These neural cadherin-like adhesion proteins are integral membrane proteins that likely play key roles in the formation and function of specific neuronal connections in the brain.
Alternative splicing has been observed, but the full-length variants are not yet fully characterized.
