Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are growth and differentiation factors originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo.
BMP4 plays a key role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans. Reduced expression is associated with several bone-related diseases, including Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region has been described, producing three variants encoding an identical protein.
