Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) family. Similar to ubiquitin, it binds to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system. Unlike ubiquitin, which directs proteins for degradation, SUMO proteins are involved in diverse cellular processes such as nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability. Activation requires cleavage of the last two amino acids at the C-terminus. Multiple pseudogenes and alternative splice variants have been identified.
