Target Information

EXOSC6 is a non-catalytic component of the RNA exosome complex, which exhibits 3’→5’ exoribonuclease activity. It participates in multiple RNA processing and degradation events in both the nucleus and cytoplasm.

In the nucleus, the RNA exosome complex:

• Matures stable RNA species such as rRNA, snRNA, and snoRNA
• Eliminates RNA processing by-products and pervasive non-coding transcripts (e.g., antisense RNA, PROMPTs)
• Degrades defective mRNAs to prevent their export to the cytoplasm

In the cytoplasm, it:

• Facilitates general mRNA turnover
• Degrades unstable mRNAs containing AU-rich elements (AREs)
• Participates in RNA surveillance pathways
• May contribute to histone mRNA degradation

The catalytic inactive RNA exosome core complex of 9 subunits (Exo-9) acts as a scaffold for RNA binding and presentation for ribonucleolysis, and for association with catalytic subunits and accessory proteins or complexes.
