Target Information

Nrl (neural retina leucine zipper) is a member of the Maf family of transcription factors, containing a conserved basic leucine zipper (bZIP)-DNA binding motif. Both Nrl and c-Maf bind to T-MARE sites and play roles in various developmental and physiological processes. The Maf-Nrl subfamily regulates cell type-specific gene expression in hematopoietic tissues, cerebellum, and developing hindbrain. Maf and Nrl proteins can form heterodimers with Fos and Jun transcription factors. In retinal and photoreceptor cells, Nrl promotes rhodopsin expression by binding to the Nrl response element in the rhodopsin promoter. Nrl expression occurs throughout the developing nervous system and is restricted to neocortex, brainstem, and retinal neurons in adults.
