Background
Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily E regulatory subunit 3 (KCNE3) is a member of the voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channel family, known for their structural and functional complexity. These channels regulate various physiological processes such as neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
KCNE3 encodes a type I membrane protein that acts as a beta subunit, assembling with potassium channel alpha-subunits to modulate gating kinetics and enhance stability of the multimeric complex. It is prominently expressed in the kidney, and mutations in this gene are associated with hypokalemic periodic paralysis.
