- Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein
- Under normal conditions, functions as a single-pass type II membrane protein with the DNA-binding domain facing the ER lumen (PubMed:24448410).
- Upon cellular stress, rapidly retrotranslocated to the cytosolic side (dependent on p97/VCP), adopting a type III topology (PubMed:24448410).
- Retrotranslocated proteins are usually degraded by the proteasome; active species do not accumulate (PubMed:24448410).
