Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. They lack a 5S rRNA component. The gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S14P family, with multiple transcript variants produced via alternative splicing.
