Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA component. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S10P family. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q, 3p, and 9p. [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
