Target Information

Cytokeratins are keratin-containing intermediate filament proteins found within the cytoskeleton of epithelial cells. They are encoded by a family of 30 genes, with 20 being epithelial-specific and 10 trichocyte-specific. These filaments form a complex network extending from the nuclear surface to the cell membrane, interacting with desmosomes and hemidesmosomes to support cell-cell adhesion and connection to underlying connective tissue. Cytokeratin networks not only provide structural support but also participate in dynamic cellular processes such as mitosis, movement, and differentiation through phosphorylation-mediated depolymerization.
