GDF11은 bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 패밀리 및 TGF-beta 슈퍼패밀리에 속하는 단백질로, 폴리베이직 단백질 절단 부위를 포함하며, 절단 후 7개의 보존된 시스테인 잔기를 가진 성숙 단백질로 전환됩니다. 이 패밀리의 단백질들은 배아 및 성체 조직에서 세포 성장과 분화를 조절하는 역할을 합니다. 생쥐 및 제노푸스 연구 결과, GDF11은 배아 발생 중 중배엽 형성과 신경 발생에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
