Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, which detoxifies electrophilic compounds such as carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products by conjugation with glutathione.
The mu class genes are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic, affecting susceptibility to carcinogens and drug efficacy. Null mutations in this gene have been associated with increased cancer risk due to higher sensitivity to environmental toxins. Multiple protein isoforms are encoded by transcript variants of this gene.
