Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific and ubiquitous. The former class, also called phylogenetically-restricted crystallins, includes proteins that are not structural components of the lens but may have regulatory or developmental roles.
CRYM encodes a taxon-specific crystallin protein that binds NADPH and shows sequence similarity to bacterial ornithine cyclodeaminases. It binds thyroid hormone and may play a role in regulation or development. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
