Target Information
GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein)은 class III intermediate filament 단백질 계열에 속하며, 주로 중추신경계의 성상교세포(astrocyte)와 특정 astroglia에서 강하게 발현됩니다.
또한 말초 신경계의 위성세포(satellite cells) 및 비수초성 슈반세포(non-myelinating Schwann cells)에서도 발견됩니다.
신경줄기세포(neural stem cells) 역시 GFAP을 강하게 발현하며, GFAP 항체는 astrocytic cell의 표지(marker)로 널리 사용됩니다.
여러 종류의 뇌종양(astrocytic cell 유래 추정)에서도 GFAP이 강하게 발현되며, 수정체 상피(lens epithelium), 간의 Kupffer 세포, 타액선 종양 세포, 적혈구에서도 보고된 바 있습니다.
GFAP은 발달 과정 중 astrocyte와 기타 교세포(glial cell)를 구별하는 표지로 사용됩니다.
GFAP 유전자의 돌연변이는 중추신경계의 희귀 질환인 Alexander disease를 유발합니다.
또한 GFAP 유전자는 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)에 의해 다양한 isoform을 생성합니다.
