Target Information
The extensive family of COL gene products (collagens) includes fibril-forming interstitial collagens (types I, II, III, and V) and basement membrane collagens (type IV). Collagens are fibrous extracellular matrix proteins with high tensile strength and are major components of connective tissues such as tendons and cartilage. They contain a triple helix domain and often show lateral self-association to form complex connective structures. Several collagens also play roles in cell adhesion, maintaining normal tissue architecture and function.
