Galactokinase (GALK1) is a major enzyme involved in galactose metabolism.
Deficiency of GALK1 causes congenital cataracts in adults.
GALK1 sequence shows 44.5% identity with E. coli galactokinase and 34.6% identity with human GALK2 gene product.
