Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction through G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature assigned to olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
