Target Information
The paraoxonase (PON) gene family in humans has three members: PON1, PON2, and PON3, located on chromosome 7q21.3–22.1.
PON1 is primarily synthesized in the liver and secreted into plasma, where it associates with high-density lipoproteins (HDL).
It hydrolyzes active metabolites of several organophosphorus insecticides (e.g., chlorpyrifos oxon, diazoxon) and nerve agents such as sarin, soman, and VX.
PON1 polymorphism has been implicated in neurodegeneration and may be an independent risk factor for Parkinson’s disease.
