Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a central role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with regulation of proliferation and the cell cycle.

c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) controls normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, and its deregulated expression induces apoptosis in different cell types. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.

c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc proteins function in proliferation, differentiation, and neoplastic disease. Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been found in several human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification is observed in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. Aberrant expression of c-Myc occurs in tumors of various origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, thyroidal, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
