Target Information

Collagens are highly conserved proteins characterized by an uninterrupted Glycine-X-Y triplet repeat.

• Col1: Fibrillar collagen found in most connective tissues; mutations linked to osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and idiopathic osteoporosis.
• Col2: Found in cartilage and vitreous humor; mutations associated with achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, early onset familial osteoarthritis, SED congenita, Langer-Saldino achondrogenesis, and Kniest dysplasia.
• Col3: Present in extensible connective tissues such as skin, lung, and vascular system; mutations cause Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV and arterial aneurysms.
• Col4: Major component of basement membranes along with laminins and enactins; composed of alpha 1(IV) and alpha 2(IV) chains in a 2:1 ratio. Col4 antibodies are useful for detecting basement membrane loss in carcinomas.
• Col5: Found in tissues containing Col1 and regulates assembly of heterotypic fibers composed of Col1 and Col5; mutations associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
