Caspase 3는 cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 인코딩하는 유전자로, 세포 사멸(apoptosis) 과정의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 합니다. Caspase들은 비활성 전구체 형태로 존재하며, 보존된 aspartic 잔기에서 절단되어 활성 효소를 형성합니다. Caspase 3는 caspase 6, 7, 9를 활성화하고, caspase 8, 9, 10에 의해 절단되어 활성화됩니다. 또한 Alzheimer’s disease와 관련된 amyloid-beta 4A 전구체 단백질의 절단에 주요하게 관여합니다. 이 유전자의 대체 스플라이싱은 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 두 가지 전사 변형을 생성합니다.
