Target Information
The secreted protein encoded by this gene participates in forming a gel matrix that encases ejaculated spermatozoa. Proteolysis by prostate-specific antigen (PSA) breaks down this matrix, enabling sperm motility. The encoded protein is less abundant than a similar semenogelin protein. Both semenogelin genes are located in a cluster on chromosome 20.
