Target Information
Heterotrimeric G proteins relay information from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Each receptor detects specific extracellular stimuli such as photons, pheromones, odorants, hormones, or neurotransmitters, while effectors like adenyl cyclase generate intracellular messengers.
In mammals, G protein alpha, beta, and gamma subunits are encoded by at least 16, 4, and 7 genes, respectively. The alpha subunits bind and hydrolyze GTP, regulating effector activity.
Four classes of Galpha subunits exist: Gs, Gi, Gq, and Galpha 12/13. The Gi class includes alpha subunits susceptible to pertussis toxin modification (Galpha i-1, i-2, i-3, o, t1, t2, z, gust), with Galpha i subtypes functioning to open atrial potassium channels.
