Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that regulate bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs (30–38 kDa) exhibit a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot configuration. BMPs stimulate bone matrix protein production and influence stromal cell and osteoclast proliferation. They also play roles in cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, morphogenesis, and dorsal/ventral patterning. BMPs bind to type II receptors and activate Smad signaling via type I receptor recruitment.
