Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of small 28S and large 39S subunits, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio (reversed compared to prokaryotic ribosomes). Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. The gene shares 3' UTR sequence with HRD1 and has pseudogenes on chromosomes 5q and 8p.
