Target Information
ZEB2, initially identified as Smad interacting-protein 1, is located in the nucleus and functions as a DNA-binding transcriptional repressor interacting with activated SMADs. Like its homolog ZEB1, ZEB2 inhibits E-cadherin transcription and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition, regulating cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, suggesting a role in tumor progression. It is often observed in the cytoplasm of cancer tissues, indicating regulated localization. Mutations in ZEB2 are associated with Hirschsprung disease/Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
