PIT1은 포유류의 뇌하수체 발달 및 호르몬 발현을 담당하는 뇌하수체 특이적 전사 인자로, POU 전사 인자 계열에 속합니다. POU 계열은 PIT1, OCT1(포유류), Unc-86(C. elegans)으로 처음 확인되었습니다.
PIT1은 POU-specific 및 POU-homeo 두 가지 단백질 도메인을 포함하며, 성장호르몬과 프로락틴 유전자에 대한 높은 친화도의 DNA 결합에 필수적입니다. 또한 프로락틴 및 갑상선자극호르몬 β 서브유닛 유전자의 조절에도 관여합니다.
