Target Information
This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene. Its primary function is to produce NADPH, a key electron donor in defense against oxidative stress and in reductive biosynthetic reactions.
G6PD shows remarkable genetic diversity, with many variants resulting from missense mutations that affect enzyme activity and cause clinical symptoms such as neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
