Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
MRPS15 encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S15P family. The encoded protein is over twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, with conserved 12S rRNA binding sites. Between human and mouse, MRPS15 is the least conserved among small subunit ribosomal proteins. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 15q and 19q.
