Alcian blue 8GX
Details
Alcian blue 8GX is a large conjugated dye molecule recommended for histological staining techniques. The cationic dye is used to stain acidic polysaccharides, certain mucopolysaccharides, and acidic mucins of tissues. It stains both sulfated and carboxylated acid mucopolysaccharides, sulfated and carboxylated glycoproteins. The dye, originally patented as a textile dye, has been used for histological staining of paraffin embedded tissues. The stained structures appear blue to bluish green. Alcian blue solutions at pH 1 stain only sulfated polysaccharides, whereas solutions of pH 2.5 stain both sulfated and carboxylated sugars. The selectivity of the dye increases in the presence of magnesium chloride.
